About The Process for Study Permit

What is a study permit?
The study permit is a document that Government of Canada issues which allows foreign nationals to
study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. All foreign nationals need a study permit to
study in Canada. In order to apply online you need to have all the documents ready and should apply
before you travel to Canada.

Please rememmber, the study permit is not a visa. It doesn’t let you enter Canada. One also needs a
visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). If Government of Canada approves the study
permit, they will also issue the Visitor Visa with your study permit.

Eligibility requirements

You can study in Canada if you:

  • Are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • Have to show the financial eligibility to pay the tution fees, living expenses for self and family member who may come with you to Canada and return.

  • Need to obey the law of the land and should not have any criminal record.

  • Should be in good health and if required need to get a medical certificate.

  • Should prove to an officer that you will leave Canada once the study permit expires.

Points to keep in mind

Your responsibilities While studying in Canada you must:

  • Make progress towards completing your program
  • Respect any conditions listed on your study permit
  • Stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements and leave Canada when your permit expires.
  • Depending on your case, there may be conditions on your study permit such as:

     -if you’re allowed to work in Canada
     -if you’re allowed to travel within Canada
     -the date you must stop studying
